Flow gently, sweet Afton among thy green braes,

Flow gently, I'll sing thee a song in thy praise ;

My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,

Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

 

Thou stock dove whose echo resounds thro' the glen,

Ye wild whistling blackbirds, in yon thorny den,

Thou green crested lapwing thy screaming forbear,

I charge you ,disturb not my slumbering fair.

 

How lofty, sweet Afton thy neighbouring hills,

Far mark;d with the courses of clear, winding rills ;

There daily I wander as noon rises high,

My flocks and my Mary's sweet cot in my eye.

 

How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below,

Where, wils in the woodlands, the primroses blow ;

There oft, as mild evening weeps over the lea,

The sweet -scented birk shades my Mary and me.

 

Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides,

And winds by the cot where my Mary resides ;

How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave,

As, gathering sweet flowers, she stems thy clear wave.

 

Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes,

Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my lays,

My Mary's asleep by thy murmuring stream,

Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream.

 

아름다운 애프턴 강아, 푸른 언덕 사이로 조용히 흘러라

너를 칭찬하는 노래를 불러줄 테니 조용히 흘러라

우리 메리가 졸졸거리는 너의 소리에 잠들어 있으니

우리 아기 깨우지 말고 조용히 흘러라...

 

대략 이런 내용이군요. 참 정겹습니다.

Robert Burns의 詩라고 합니다.

 

조너선 스필만(Jonathan Edwards Spilman)이 작곡한 이 노래는 원래는

스코틀랜드 노래였습니다. 그 후, 미국에 있는 "애프턴 강"을 주제로 개작되어

'Flow gently sweet Afton' 이라는 미국 민요가 되었습니다.

 

우리나라에서는 '불어라 봄바람'으로 알려져 있고,

또 기독교의 찬송가에서 인용되어 불려지기도 합니다.
